Physical Activity

Playground Equipment

Here in Mount Anville, we are very fortunate to have an extensive array of playground equipment which we have built up over the years. Every two weeks, the classes rotate the equipment, which includes skipping ropes, balls, bean bags and hula hoops. Playground leaders take responsibility for collecting and distributing the equipment.

Music in the Yard

To celebrate different events and initiatives throughout the year we play music at yard time such as during Seachtain na Gaeilge, Well Being Week, Active Week and on many other occasions.

Playground Leaders

Our Active Committee members also take on the role of playground leaders in our school. They meet once a fortnight and have many different roles to play in keeping our school active!

  • Collect and distribute yard equipment
  • Collect and distribute different templates for completion
  • Prepare resources for Active Breaks in our classrooms
  • Encourage classmates to play games at breaktime.
  • Lead active lines at the end of yard time.
  • Share ideas on how we can improve activity levels in our school.

Whole School Active Events

Here in Mount Anville, we incorporate physical activity in as many whole school events as possible. Our students enjoy ‘A Witchy Walk’ and a ‘Santa Dash’ annually as well as other running challenges such as our ‘Run Around Ireland’ or ‘Run to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games.’

Witchy Walk

We encourage all children to walk, scoot or cycle to school. To make this more fun on Hallowe’en we had the ‘WITCHY WALK’ where all children walked to school in their costumes.

Santa Dash

The day before our Christmas Break we decided as a whole school to firstly walk, scoot or cycle to school in our Santa Hats! Then at 9.45 all children from Junior infants to second class ran a mile in their Christmas jumpers and Santa hats. At 10.15 all children from third to sixth ran their mile! It was so much fun and looked brilliant, very festive! We love to stay active!

Active Breaks

Every class selects three active break activities to reduce sedentary time during the school day.

There are different activities for the junior classes to the senior classes. Active Leaders wrote activity break ideas on lollipop sticks and each class selects a new set at the beginning of every month.

Active Breaks Challenge

Active Walkway

Students enjoy the Walkway route around the school, stopping at blue zones to do jumping jacks, running on the spot and other fun movement activities

Here is a video of our 6th Class girls showing off our Active Walkway route

Running Challenge

Our running challenge this year is to run from Dublin to Paris for the Olympics in 2024. Students run laps each morning in our school field. Each lap = 1 lollipop stick = 1 km. Our journey is 1,052.4 km.

A laps record sheet will be filled in each week for a period of five weeks.

Fingers crossed we can make it!
