What is the Active School Flag?

Active School Flag is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland. The Active School Flag is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often.

Over the next year we will be very busy in Mount Anville Primary School working on the following areas: Physical Education, Physical Activity and Partnerships. We will also organise an Active School Week in April. Please click on the mentioned headings to find out more.

A Letter from the Active Flag Committee

This term we are continuing on with our journey toward receiving our active flag for our school. Our active week just before the summer was a great success so thank you all for your involvement and support it was a super week!

We have a great Active Committee set up in the school made up of a number of staff members and two girls from every class.

As part of our active flag, we will be focusing on the following before Christmas ;

  • Use of playground equipment at lunchtime (each class has been given a box of playground equipment that they can play with during yard time)
  • Game of the week/month (the playground leaders will be teaching their class a new game to play in the playground for example 'snatch the bacon 'hopscotch' 'x's and o's' etc.
  • We will be doing a 'Witches Walk' On Friday 25th October. (Whereby where possible we encourage your children to walk/scoot/cycle to school in their Halloween costumes!)

Mrs Egan has been working hard to give each class some Active Homework every week. One of the many criteria to become an active flag school is P.E. homework. We introduced this during the last school year and we will continue it this year.

On your child’s P.E. day P.E. homework will be noted in the homework journal. It’s based on what we do during P.E. so it will give you an insight into what is happening in P.E. Please encourage your daughter to complete this homework every day. You might even want to join in and do the activities with her. It will only take between 5 and 10 minutes and the emphasis is on fun and enjoyment. Physical activity is usually more fun when done in groups.

As you are probably aware children need 60 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity every day. So these 5 to 10 minutes can be part of this. It can be done before or after the written homework, or even in between as an active break - whatever works best.

I am aware that some days are filled with other physical activities and sports. It’s perfectly fine to skip P.E. homework on those days. If we achieve an average of 3 times a week, we are doing well.

Many thanks for all your support
